From field to vase: 3 tools you need for floral pleasure
✂️ The right flower scissors make all the difference
Whether you are a novice picker or have been making field bouquets for years: good tools are half the battle. And that starts with your flower shears .
Why not just use kitchen scissors?
It may seem harmless: cutting a stem with kitchen scissors. But you are actually crushing the stem. This hinders the water absorption and makes flowers wilt faster. Especially with softer stems, such as those of dahlias or cosmos, you will quickly notice the difference.
Types of scissors & their uses:
1. Flower scissors or garden flower scissors
➡️ Light, sharp and precise. Ideal for harvesting cut flowers. The blades are often thinner and ensure a clean cut.
2. Rose Ritser
➡️ Handy tool to strip the thorns and leaves of roses in one movement. Saves time and your fingers.
3. Pruning shears (for woody stems)
➡️ Do you have branches with woody stems (like lilacs)? Then pruning shears will come in handy.
Additional tools to bring into your home as a florist:
🌿 Kenzan – Japanese flower arranging needle that allows you to place flowers upright in a bowl without floral foam.
🐔 Chicken wire – For larger pieces or vase compositions.
🧽 Clean tools – Don’t forget to clean & sharpen your scissors and kenzans regularly. Bacteria will shorten the shelf life of your flowers.
